Ottobock SE & Co. KGaA, commonly known as Ottobock, is a German company specializing in prosthetics, orthotics, wheelchairs, and exoskeletons. Founded in 1919 by prosthetist Otto Bock in Berlin, the company revolutionized orthopedic technology by introducing mass production techniques for prosthetic components, significantly improving the efficiency and quality of prosthetic care for World War I veterans.
In 1920, Ottobock relocated its production operations to Königsee in Thuringia, Germany. Following World War II, in 1946, the company established its headquarters in Duderstadt, Lower Saxony, Germany, where it remains today.
Ottobock expanded internationally by opening its first North American office in Minneapolis in 1958 to serve veterans of World War II and the Korean War. In 2015, the North American headquarters moved to Austin, Texas.
Throughout its history, Ottobock has been at the forefront of innovation in orthopedic technology. Notable advancements include the introduction of myoelectric arm prostheses in 1965 and the development of the Michelangelo Hand, a fully articulated robotic hand prosthesis. W
