The Beauty of the Countryside
I was taken away by this canal and waited for a boat to pass by. What a beautiful countryside. France is a truly a vacation place who likes country living.
Sights along the Way
Even though I set out with the goal of covering ground, the Loire gently changed my pace. Riding beside it, I felt myself slow down, drawn into the quiet rhythm of the countryside. Following the river gave me a simple kind of freedom — I didn’t have to think so much about where to go next. I just let the water lead, and trusted the journey to unfold.
Gien
Before running into Gien, I was fixated with this nuclear plant. France operates 56 nuclear reactors across 18 nuclear power plants. These reactors contribute to a significant portion of the country's electricity generation, making France one of the world's leading nations in terms of nuclear energy usage.
Combleux
Combleux is a hidden gem in the Loire Valley, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical charm, and a peaceful rural lifestyle. It's an ideal destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse themselves in the tranquil and picturesque French countryside.
Bike Tour Revival
What began years earlier on the Caminos of Spain resurfaced after seasons of pause, uncertainty, and reflection. Along the Loire River in the summer of 2023, movement became more than travel; it became a reclamation of purpose, trust, and the belief that it is never too late to begin again.
Tours
When I got here, I saw a lot of things going on. I’d got to stop and absorb the atmosphere. Tours is a university. Tours is a vibrant city located in the heart of France, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Known for its rich history, beautiful architecture, and lively cultural scene, Tours is often referred to as the "Garden of France" due to its abundance of parks and gardens.
Medieval Town
Saumur hosts various events throughout the year, including the Anjou Vélo Vintage (a vintage cycling event), Les Grandes Tablées du Saumur-Champigny (a wine and food festival), and equestrian shows by the Cadre Noir.
Summer Downpour
Taking the Eurovelo 6 isn’t that complicated particularly right along the Loire river, but being sidetracked is part of the journey.
Eurovelo 6
EuroVelo 6, often referred to as the "Rivers Route," is one of the most popular and scenic cycling routes in Europe. It stretches from the Atlantic coast in France to the Black Sea in Romania, covering approximately 4,450 kilometers (about 2,765 miles). The route passes through 10 countries, making it an extraordinary journey for cyclists looking to explore diverse cultures, landscapes, and historical sites.
Starting All Over Again
Nantes has a rich history dating back to the Roman times and was an important city during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The Château des Ducs de Bretagne (Castle of the Dukes of Brittany) is a major historical landmark that highlights the city's medieval heritage
Vatnajökull Glacier
Skógafoss is one of Iceland’s most iconic and breathtaking waterfalls, cascading 60 meters (197 feet) over a rugged cliff into a misty pool below. Located along the country’s southern coast near the village of Skógar, it marks the former sea cliff, now far inland. The surrounding area is a striking blend of green hills, black sand plains, and dramatic mountain landscapes. A staircase alongside the falls leads to a panoramic viewpoint above, offering sweeping views of the coastline and inland highlands. Nearby, the Skógar Museum and the start of the popular Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail connect travelers deeper into Iceland’s volcanic and glacial interior.
The Golden Circle
Touring Iceland's Ring Road is an incredible adventure, offering breathtaking landscapes, diverse natural wonders, and a glimpse into the country's unique culture.
