A self-retreat at Alpargata Farm
Maro Farms
As the summer was fast approaching after the Covid period, I was compelled to find a place to stay for the month of August. So, I joined WWOOF to find a farm where I could stay. After a number of tries inquiring about availabilities, I finally got a message from Sabine telling me to get in touch with her husband, Aurelio. I gave him a call and our talk was welcoming and pleasant and we also managed to find a date of my coming. I managed to find a place for the month of August.
WWOOF, which stands for World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms, is an international organization that connects volunteers with organic farmers. The primary purpose of WWOOF is to promote cultural exchange, sustainable living, and organic farming practices. The organization operates in many countries around the world, and each country has its own independent WWOOF organization.
Here's how WWOOF typically works:
Volunteers (WWOOFers): Individuals interested in organic farming, sustainable living, and cultural exchange can become WWOOF volunteers. They register with the WWOOF organization of the country they are interested in and pay a membership fee. In return, they gain access to a list of organic farms that are willing to host volunteers.
Host Farms (WWOOF Hosts): Organic farmers, or hosts, who are part of the WWOOF network, offer accommodations and meals to volunteers in exchange for help with various tasks on the farm. These tasks can include planting, harvesting, weeding, animal care, and other activities related to sustainable agriculture.
Cultural Exchange: WWOOFing provides a unique opportunity for volunteers to immerse themselves in local cultures and learn about organic farming practices. It's a hands-on experience that allows participants to gain practical skills, make new friends, and contribute to sustainable and environmentally friendly farming.
Duration and Expectations: The length of stay for WWOOFers varies, but it is typically a few weeks. Expectations and arrangements between the host and the volunteer are usually outlined in advance. While volunteers are not paid for their work, they receive free accommodation and meals.
WWOOF has been a popular and successful organization, fostering connections between people interested in sustainable agriculture and those practicing it. It's a way for individuals to travel, learn about different farming practices, and contribute to the global organic farming community. Keep in mind that the structure and specific details of WWOOF programs can vary between countries, so individuals interested in participating should check the guidelines of the specific country they are interested in.
